The advancing digitalization is transforming the solar industry at record speed. Artificial intelligence (AI) in particular has an enormous potential to help optimize processes in energy management and throughout the entire photovoltaic (PV) value chain. AI makes it possible to process large amounts of data efficiently, perform precise analyses and control complex systems on the basis of data.
This not only enhances operation and production processes, but also helps increase efficiency, minimize downtime and reduce the operational workload on personnel.
There is a wide range of applications for innovative digital solutions. In PV production, AI can accelerate the development of more efficient and sustainable solar cells through material properties analyses. In addition, algorithms enable early detection of manufacturing defects.
There are also increasingly intelligent digital software solutions for installers that aid in customer communication, system planning and monitoring. GeoAI can identify suitable locations for solar installations by assessing aerial and satellite images. Algorithms are also increasingly used in monitoring and maintenance: They analyze drone images and operating data for early detection of potential faults.
Based on consumption data and weather forecasts, AI manages the self-consumption and energy storage in home energy systems that combine solar installations, battery storage systems, electric vehicles and heat pumps in a way that maximizes profit and efficiency. In large-scale PV battery systems, algorithms optimize the automatic switching between self-consumption, electricity trading and grid services, based on real-time data on electricity prices and the grid status. New types of inverters use AI to match their output to ambient conditions.
