As is well known, one of the major challenges of the energy transition is to balance out the fluctuations, i.e. the volatility, of renewables in order to ensure a steady and secure energy supply. Hybrid power plants - that is, PV power plants paired with large-scale storage, wind turbines, or both - are becoming increasingly important here. These are currently gaining ground due to numerous advantages and are included in the EEG tender volume via the so-called innovation tenders, which promote innovative renewable projects. Prices and availability of storage, exchange electricity prices, limited fossil generation capacities and "delayed" grid expansion in Germany are some of the factors currently influencing the starting position for hybrid power plants. What are the current challenges, what are the opportunities offered by the combination of solar and wind, and to what extent can hybrid power plants help with the lagging grid expansion? We talk about this in the current episode with Dr. Julia Badeda, member of the management board at ABO Wind.

Dr.-Ing. Julia Badeda initially conducted research on battery storage and grid integration of renewable energies and their modeling. She built up the Hybrid Energy Systems and Battery Storage department at ABO Wind from 2019. She has been a member of the management team since 2022.
ABO Wind plans and builds wind and solar farms, battery and hydrogen projects worldwide. For 25 years, ABO Wind's in-house specialist departments have offered everything from a single source: from site assessment, planning, approval and financing to construction, grid connection, operational management and service. Securing a future worth living for future generations is what drives ABO Wind as its overriding goal. Renewables are their DNA.
